I always try to incorporate other subjects into my classroom. Cross-curricular lessons are not only a benefit to the student's academically, but it gives them a chance to see cohesion between their teachers. Reinforcing common content in P.E. adds more value to what the students are learning and solidifies the importance of the subject. Self Assessment: Target - I achieved this standard by working to incorporate literacy, art, and music into my baseball unit. I worked with art, music and classroom teachers to create a team setting where students are working towards a common goal, not only in my classroom, but theirs as well. |
My lessons and my teaching always focus around the cues of the skill that we are learning. I am able to adapt the cues to meet the needs of my students and ensure that they are developmentally appropriate. I always try to organize my students into safe individual work spaces so they can focus on the skill and cues they are learning. Self Assessment: Target - I achieved this standard during my lesson on front rolls. I had students work on their "home" mats where they maximized their rolling time. I explained, gave demonstrations, and reiterated the cues as they had several attempts at the front roll. They were able to combine the front roll with other movements as well. |
Implementing appropriate lessons for students using biomechanics and physiological principles is required in order to plan for developmentally appropriate learning experiences. I have to take several things in to account to ensure that they are able to move safely and effectively when completing a task. I want students physically able to do something. If I push them beyond their physiological threshold then they will feel discouraged and lose buy-in.
Self Assessment: Target - I achieved this standard by bringing developmentally appropriate Presidential Youth Fitness Test Standards to Mead High School. In the past, students had been working at levels that were too high for their age range. I noticed this and created graphics for the schools to use for years to come. |
I use behavior-change/psychological principles to create developmentally appropriate learning experiences for my students. I will progress through a lesson with students focusing on developmentally appropriate cues, applying the cues with a partner, taking the skill they have learned and applying it in a game. Then I will have students reflect on the importance of their learned skill and how it applies to overall performance.
Self Assessment: Target - I achieved this standard by breaking down my instruction into a very detailed arrangement that focuses on strategies for teaching, instructional adaptation, assessments and learning experiences. I organize the lesson like this so students understand the basics and then encourage them to take charge of their learning experience. |
During the backwards design process, I establish unit goals, lesson objectives, and tasks that are developmentally appropriate for every grade level. Once I have established my tasks, I accompany them with refinements and ways for students to apply them.
Self Assessment: Target - I achieved this standard by creating skill proficiency charts for every developmental level. Each level had an extension, refinement that reinforced the cues, and application to help guide skill practice. Developmental analysis charts allow me to plan tasks for all skill levels and help me find the best route to help students learn and grow. |
It is hard to understand where you are going if you don't know where you have come from. There is a great deal of misconceptions about Physical Education, but there is much more going on in our classrooms than the public realizes. We have grown as a profession throughout history, advocate for all of our students regardless of race/gender/sexual orientation, and battle issues at the state and federal level that plague our classroom.
Self Assessment: Target - I achieved this standard by participating in several hot topic debates throughout my undergraduate career. These debates have allowed me to be knowledgeable enough to advocate for better practices in my future classrooms. |
