Once I establish my unit objectives, I begin to plan how I will assess those objectives. I try to create authentic assessments that will not only show me short term results, but will also show student growth at the conclusion of the unit. I strive to create assessments that are simple and practical, not only for students, but for data collection as well. Self Assessment: Target - I achieved this standard by creating a kicking assessment for my self-defense students. The assessment required students to view 5 different kick example videos and use pen and paper to identify the kicks and cues. This assessment was done twice; Once before the material was introduced, and again at the end of the unit. |
When I create formative assessments, I try to complement them with a summative assessment that will showcase student learning at the conclusion of my unit. Both formative and summative assessments can focus on the psychomotor, cognitive or the affective domain. Assessments can provide me with data before, during and at the end of the unit. I can individualize instruction to each student and each class through this data.
Self Assessment: Target - I achieved this standard by creating a psychomotor assessment that focused on striking with long handled implements. 5th grade students were assessed over 5 lessons. Students were graded on a rubric and data was compiled to show student learning through out the unit. |
I believe that reflection is a crucial part of the learning process. Not only is it important to have your students reflect, but it is also very important for the teacher to self reflect. I reflect by compiling the results of my lesson, which could be done by looking at formal data or informal data. One my favorite things to look at are the number of behavior incidents throughout the lesson. This informal data can be an indicator of my lack of engaging content, or it can tell me to look beyond the classroom and to take a peek at social and emotional side of things.
Self Assessment: Target - I achieved this standard by reflecting after every lesson during all my units at both the elementary level and secondary level. If I had the data available, I first compiled my data to help aide me in the reflection process. I try to go through every aspect of the lesson and find things that I did well, and things that I can improve upon. I will make changes right away, so I can allow myself an opportunity to take what I did and make it better for next time. |
